Anthony Zinno takes down $2M guarantee CPPT Venetian Main Event

The Card Player Poker Tour (CPPT) Venetian Main Event found a winner last Wednesday. Anthony Zinno, who was the CPPT Player of the Year in 2015, held on to take the victory, outlasting 546 opponents for the first-place prize of $466,670. He has now picked up over $8 million in live-action tournament winnings in his career.

Anthony Zinno takes down $2-million guarantee CPPT Venetian Main EventThis summer proved to be fairly successful for the U.S. poker pro. He cashed 11 times during the WSOP, making three final table appearances. He took third in both the $10,000 NLHE Championship and the $565 Pot-Limit Omaha online tournament for a combined $186,000 before picking up some more WSOP cash on his way to the Venetian.

With the huge win behind him, Zinno said that it’s time for a vacation. He stated, “I’ve been looking for a good excuse to take a break. I’ve been grinding, almost nonstop, for the past few months. I had just one night off the entire WSOP. I was on a mission to get another win. So this feels like a good opportunity to take a nice, long vacation. I pulled out a win, and now I can reward myself and focus on things I’ve been neglecting while I’ve been concentrating on poker.”

Zinno has picked up three WPT titles and one WSOP bracelet, which he won at the $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller tournament in 2015. In 2013, he made it to the final table in the same CPPT tournament and the rest is history. “My first pretty big score came in this tournament in 2013. I didn’t have a large enough bankroll to put up $5,000 myself back then, so my buddy was nice enough to go halves with me. I ended up getting fourth place ($86,964), which basically started my live career. Shortly after that, I won the WPT at Borgata,” he explained.

The win didn’t come easy for Zinno. At the final table, he was up against players such as Dan Shak, Martin Jacobson, Stephen Chidwick, Ben Jones, Bryan Piccioli and Jay Farber. Chidwick has had an incredible run this summer, reaching the final table in 18 events. He won four titles this summer and has now amassed over $7.3 million. He made it to fourth at the CPPT Venetian Main Event to add another $177,091 to his wallet.

Piccioli fell next, taking home $237,808 in the process, leading to a showdown between Zinno and Jones. On the final hand, Jones, who was down in chips, responded to a Zinno three-bet by shoving all-in. Zinno felt confident and immediately called. Flipping the cards over, Jones was holding A-K against Zinno’s A-J, giving Jones the slight edge. The British player found lady luck on the flop when a K-6-6 appeared, and he was already beginning to see his chip stack double to take over as leader. However, lady luck is a fickle creature. She produced a J on the turn and another on the river to give Zinno a set and the win.

Jones, who took down the $1,600 six-max NLHE WSOP event in June, was awarded $390,956 as a consolation prize for his second-place finish.

South Korean lawmakers charged over Kangwon Land hiring scandal

Two South Korean opposition lawmakers have been charged in connection with their alleged involvement in the hiring scandal inside the Kangwon Land casino.

South Korean lawmakers charged over Kangwon Land hiring scandalKBS World Radio reported that Rep. Yeom Dong-yeol and Rep. Kweon Seong-dong, members of the conservative Liberty Korea Party, were indicted for abuse of power and business interference following allegations that they wielded their influence to ensure the employment of their acquaintances in Kangwon Land.

The case against Kweon and Yeom stemmed from the investigation conducted by South Korean prosecutors against former Kangwon Land CEO Choi Heung-jip, who was accused of hiring hundreds of people based on their political connections.

The hiring scandal, which rocked the governing Democratic Party, was dubbed ‘Kangwon Land Gate.’ It was also described as “a crime which would have been possible only in the 1960s or ‘70s.”

During their investigation, prosecutors alleged that Kweon’s former secretary, only identified in local news reports as Kim, bagged a managerial-level job for checking water quality at the casino after the politician pulled some strings.

Kangwon reportedly had a list of applicants—33 job seekers to be exact—but Choi ordered officials to hire Kim.

The state lawyers found that a total of 50 individuals landed a job at the casino because of their ties to Kweon and Yeom. The prosecutors earlier sought to have Yeom arrested, but parliament refused to hand him over to the authorities. Kweon managed to get a judge to quash the arrest warrant request against him.

Last year, Kangwon Land’s operator issued an official statement admitting that 493 of the 518 people hired between July 2011 and February 2014 got their jobs primarily on the strength of their ties to politicians or other influential figures.

In March, South Korean President Moon Jae-in ordered the dismissal of 226 Kangwon Land employees after learning that they secured their jobs through unlawful means.

Early NFL week 1 odds roundup: Betting lines and trends

NFL handicappers and oddsmakers will tell you that the first week of the regular season is the hardest to pinpoint because no one really knows what teams truly are yet.

Odds courtesy of

Early NFL week 1 odds roundup: Betting lines and trendsThe NFL has the most parity of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States, and every year a few clubs that were supposed to be good aren’t and a few that were supposed to stink don’t. Just look at the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2016, they were last in the NFC East. Last year, they won the franchise’s first Super Bowl.

The biggest Week 1 home underdogs for 2018 are, to no surprise, the Cleveland Browns as they are +6.5 against the AFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers. The Browns come off the second 0-16 season in league history and have one victory in 32 games under head coach Hue Jackson.

In addition, Cleveland hasn’t won a season opener since 2004. Last year, Cleveland also opened at home against Pittsburgh and managed to cover a 10-point spread in a 21-18 loss. It was only the Browns’ fourth cover in their past 20 season openers.

One interesting game is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the New Orleans Saints, which we will call the Suspension Bowl. That’s because Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston is suspended the first three games of the season for an off-field issue and Saints running back Mark Ingram is banned the first four because he failed a drug test.

The Saints opened at -7 but that line already has moved as high as 9.5 points at some sportsbooks in the wake of the Winston news. Veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick, barring injury, would start in his place.

There is one game currently listed as a pick’em on the Week 1 NFL betting board: Washington Redskins at Arizona Cardinals. Both teams will have new starting quarterbacks: Alex Smith for Washington and, presumably, Sam Bradford for Arizona, which also has an entirely new coaching staff.

The first Sunday night game of the year is Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers, the NFL’s oldest rivalry. That had the biggest spread on the board at Packers -8 but has been passed at some books by Bucs-Saints.

Aaron Rodgers is the early betting favorite to win a third NFL MVP Award. He missed a big chunk of last season due to a broken collarbone and the Packers missed the playoffs. Green Bay has been a good Week 1 bet in recent years, covering eight of its past 11.

And it’ll be the head coaching debut of former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for Chicago. The Bears were busy this offseason adding offensive weapons around second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

Electric shock therapy on special needs students: Treatment or torment?

A Massachusetts school for special needs children can continue to use a form of electric shock therapy on students after a long-running battle with state officials over the controversial treatment was decided in their favor.

The Judge Rotenberg Center in Canton is the only learning center in the country to use the graduated electronic decelerator to control the behavior of students with development delays.

The commonwealth had been trying since 2013 to ban the practice, but last week, Judge Katherine Fields, the first justice of the Bristol County Probate and Family Court, sided with the school.

The school did not respond to a request for comment, but instead directed ABC News to contact the JRC Parents Group, which said in a statement, “No one loves our children more than we do; we have tried and continue to try everything available to them, including positive behavior therapies and medications to help our children, but as the Court found – there is no evidence that any alternative treatment would be effective to treat our children and keep them safe.”

What is the treatment?

According to the FDA, the GED is used for “aversive conditioning.” That’s a psychology term meaning giving a negative stimulation whenever a particular unwanted action occurs. For example, people put a rubber band around their wrist and “snap” it whenever they have a cigarette; the goal is for the behavior to eventually be eliminated because of the association.

The GED works by delivering skin shocks for particular behaviors, trying to eliminate the behaviors.

The JRC Parents’ Group told ABC News, “It is a treatment of last resort. That is the important part to know about GED.”

What is it used for?

At JRC, the electrical shocks associated with GED are used to prevent and control self-injury or violent aggression. The skin shock might be used when the patient is aggressive against someone else (hitting, biting, or throwing things), or even to themselves (slamming their own head against a wall, or trying to hurt themselves in another way).

“There is a process the committee goes through where the therapy is peer reviewed to see what has been tried and what worked. Some of these parents have been dealing with these issues for 15 years; there are times when children attack their own parents. To people who think we don’t care, it’s not that, but it is an option when everything else fails,” said the JRC Parents’ Group.

Is it painful?

GED is not the same as Electroconvulsive therapy (ETC), which is when volts of electricity are directed towards the brain to treat depression. However, it does deliver painful shocks to the skin to condition patients with autism or behavioral disorders to stop a certain behavior or action.

What are the benefits and drawbacks?

While use of GED may slow down the student’s aggressive or inappropriate behavior, it’s a management technique, not something that will treat the underlying cause of the problem. While aversive treatment can be useful in stopping a behavior, it is hard to regulate what is considered excessive and what will be successful for certain patients as opposed to others.

Additionally, it’s virtually impossible to do studies on the exact dosage, timing and factors involved in GED needed to stop a certain behavior.

Controversy surrounding the issue

There is controversy surrounding the use of GED because of the unclear intersection of medical use, ethics, who has the ability to administer the shocks, state supervision and the judiciary system. While Fields’ ruling allows JRC to continue with the aversive therapy, it may be mooted by an FDA proposal to ban the use of electrical stimulation devices to control aggressive or self-injurious behavior.

Beyond the power dynamic between government and health care, many, including the disability rights group ADAPT and the American Civil Liberties Union, oppose GED as inhumane. And, in 2013, a United Nations report by the Special Rapporteur on Torture said the rights of the children treated with GED “have been violated under the UN Convention against Torture and other international standards.”

What does the FDA say about the treatment?

The FDA has previously reported that electroshock therapy, such as GED, can result in physical effects — burning of the skin, trauma, including contusions, falls, oral injury, and fractures, seizure complications or impacts on the heart.

In 2011 and 2012, the FDA put forth warnings to JRC, saying the center was not following guidelines in regard to GED.

And, in 2016, the FDA put forth a proposal to ban GED, but the rule has yet to be implemented.

Imperial Pacific could bring in night construction workers to finish casino on time

Imperial Pacific International (IPI) is trying desperately to finish its Imperial Pacific Resort (IPR) in Saipan as fast as it can. However, company officials admitted to the Commonwealth Casino Imperial Pacific could bring in night construction workers to finish casino on timeCommission last week that it doesn’t believe it can finish construction by its August deadline, and has asked for an extension until December. Even with that extension, IPI has acknowledged that it might be necessary to employ a second shift of construction workers, who would have to work at night, to complete the casino by December.

VP of construction, Erik Poon, is currently discussing the possibility with the casino’s contractor, Pacific Rim Contractors. The executive was quoted by the Saipan Tribune saying, “Pacific Rim and IPI have been talking about second (work) shift which will start after 7 pm until midnight. Right now, we already notified the people concerned about the possibility of night shift work.”

According to Poon, “The exact date we still have to iron out with Pacific Rim because right now, we have to put the safety features needed especially at night before we put a date for the second (work) shift.”

A lack of manpower has been the primary reason for delays of construction, according to Poon. IPI has increased the amount of construction workers considerably over the course of the past several months, but it may have been too little, too late for IPI to meet the schedule.

“For the past few months, IPI has significantly increased manpower, especially from IPI’s side as we have H2-B workers. It helped us a lot to put our schedule even further… Moving along I can say we are back to normal like the way we want it,” Poon said, according to the news outlet. “Currently, we have 68 management staff and 1,402 workers in construction—44 from Sinopan, 677 from Pacific Rim, and 700 IPI H2-B workers… we are still hiring… our requirement is 1,500 workers and right now we have 700 so we still have room to grow for sure.”

The IPR has been plagued with issues and delays almost since construction began. There have been accusations of financial improprieties, lack of adherence to contractual agreements and violations of employment agreements. In March, four Chinese companies involved with the resort’s construction were ordered to pay $14 million in compensation to more than 2,400 workers stemming from unpaid wages and subsequent damages.

When it is complete, the IPR will be a luxury integrated resort on the US territory with more than 200 gaming tables, 350 slot machines and a 14-story hotel. There are also plans for beach and night clubs to be added to the resort.

Tabcorp raises bet on online lottery reseller Jumbo Interactive

Australia’s largest betting operator Tabcorp Holdings has increased its stake in online lottery reseller Jumbo Interactive Limited, further cementing the commercial relationship between them.

Tabcorp raises bet in online lottery reseller Jumbo InteractiveIn a disclosure to the Australia Stock Exchange, Tabcorp said it bought approximately 3.5 million Jumbo shares at an excise price of AUD2.37 (US$1.75) per share, for a total of AUD8.3 million ($6.08 million). The sale was made through Tabcorp’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Tatts Online Pty. Ltd.

The Aussie wagering operator also sold approximately 2.9 million Jumbo shares worth AUD6.9 million ($5.09 million) to a group of institutional investors in conjunction with the exercise of the option with the operator of Oz Lotteries site. Despite this move, Tabcorp’s stake in Jumbo still grew to 12.49 percent. As of July 3, Tabcorp’s shareholding in Jumbo has increased from 6.6 million shares to approximately 7.2 million shares.

“Tabcorp regards its holding in Jumbo as strategically important. Tabcorp has no current intention to sell any remaining shareholding in Jumbo,” the company said in a statement.

The relationship between Jumbo and Tabcorp started in May 2017 when Tatts Group Limited inked a long term extension and expansion agreement with the online lottery reseller. The AUD15.66 million ($11.56 million) initial investment of Tatts was used by Jumbo to fund or supplement additional growth or business investment opportunities; strategic acquisition opportunities; and expansion opportunities to accelerate its growing charity lottery business.

In its recent trading update, Jumbo expressed optimism that its net profit after tax (NPAT) may grow 45 percent to AUD11.3 million ($8.34 million) in FY 2018 from AUD7.6 million ($5.61 million) in the previous financial year.

The company’s total transactional value may also rise 25 percent to AUD182 million ($134.36 million) in FY 2018, while growth in its active customer base is expected to lift Jumbo’s FY2018 revenue by 15 percent to AUD37.3 million ($27.54 million).

Jumbo Interactive founder and CEO Mike Veverka attributed the company’s optimism to the “continual improvements in marketing that have engaged existing customers as well as acquiring new customers.”

Macau casino GGR slowdown extends into June

Casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Macau grew at a moderate pace in June, much to the disappointment of gaming analysts.

Macau casino GGR slowdown extends into JuneFinancial records showed that Macau casino GGR grew by 12.5 percent to approximately MOP22.49 billion (US$2.81 billion) last month compared with MOP19.99 billion ($2.49 billion) in June 2017. The result was lower than the analysts’ consensus of 18 percent.

The June results brings Macau casinos’ GGR tally for the first half of 2018 to nearly MOP150.22 billion ($18.66 billion), a year-on-year expansion of 18.9 percent.

Gaming analysts attributed several factors behind the GGR slowdown in the last two months after a having stellar runs in April and March 2018, with international brokerage Union Gaming noting that business volumes across Macau fizzled in the last week of June.

Union Gaming added that Macau continues to bear the brunt of the World Cup, with some gamblers opting to postpone their trips to Macau.

The month of June was also considered one of the toughest comps of the year. Union Gaming analyst Grant Govertsen pointed out that “June still grew 12.5 per cent on top of a nearly +26 per cent comparison.”

“Without truly feeling the benefit of the newest supply and against a tough comp, we think the market is demonstrating its resilience with GDP+++ growth and would look for a rebound in growth rates as comps ease and as new supply begins to ramp more closely in line with historical trends later this year,” Govertsen said in his latest industry update.

JP Morgan analysts DS Kim and Sean Zhuang agreed that Macau’s June GGR result remained resilient “considering the slow seasonality post the holiday and negative impact of the World Cup.”

Union Gaming forecast that Macau GGR’s weakness would continue in July, which faces the toughest comparison of the year after growing 29.2 percent in July 2017, as well as an unfavorable calendar with one fewer Sunday.
